Search Help for Printed Works
The search fields are not case-sensitive.
Date: The Date field applies to publications only. Searches can only be made by year. Enter dates in the form of YYYY. To create a range of dates, fill in the fields both to the left and the right of the “to.” Entering 1855 to 1865 returns all entries from the start of 1855 through 1865. Entering 1855 to 1855 returns all entries with an 1855 date.
Name: Search this field for authors, editors, compilers, illustrators, etc. Entering Jack, Ian generates his entries. Entering Jack alone returns all Jacks. A surname that constitutes part of a longer name returns the longer name as well. The more words that are entered, the narrower the search results. For Elizabeth Barrett Browning use Browning, E.B. or the abbreviation EBB. For Robert Browning use Browning, R. or the abbreviation RB.
Role: Click on the drop-down button to search by Author, Editor, Compiler, Illustrator, etc. Leaving the field blank returns all.
Title: Search this field for titles of articles, periodicals, books, multi-volume editions, etc. Entering words will return all titles containing those words (and forms of them). Entering book returns all titles containing “book”; this includes The Ring and the Book, as well as Bookseller and “A Box of Books.” The more words that are entered, the narrower the search results.
Entry Numbers: All entries are preceded by a number with the letter prefix “P.” This field is useful for tracing cross-references; enter the number as it appears.
Sorted by: When only one field is filled, the sort order defaults to that field, except in the case of Role, which defaults to name. When more than one field has been filled, the sort order defaults to Entry Number order. To change a search result sort order, select an option from the drop-down list.
